Now, me and Gyre are only here for two nights, and who knows when we’ll be back. But it’s important to me that this space doesn’t just exist for traveling super geniuses like me. It’s for you; it’s for this village. Whether you do it once a week, or just once every few seasons, the important thing is that you keep this space alive. So I’m going to pass along some tips and tools that I’ve learned for doing that.

First, a good open mic starts way before it actually starts. You have to put in some work building relationships, promoting the event, making sure your friends and their friends know about it. Let the teachers know, so they can tell their students. Let the elders know. Let any local rabblerousers or activists know. Maybe put up some posters with the information. Get people excited; never take them for granted or just expect that people are going to show up because you’re cool.
